James is the former managing director of The Guardian Group of Newspapers. Having studied law at Oxford and Harvard, James joined the board on the Guardian in 1969, and he was appointed Deputy Managing Director of The Guardian in 1973. James became Chief Executive of The Guardian Group after stints as MD of The Guardian and The Observer newspapers. He was Chairman of Broadcast Communications Plc. and Fourth Estate publishers.
